Jonas Lund

Jonas Lund (*1984, Sweden) creates paintings, sculptures, photography, websites and performances that critically reflect contemporary networked systems and power structures of control. His artistic practice involves creating systems and setting up parameters that oftentimes require engagement from the viewer. This results in performative artworks where tasks are executed according to algorithms or a set of rules. Through his works, Lund investigates the latest issues generated by the increasing digitalisation of contemporary society like authorship, participation and distribution of agency. At the same time, he questions the mechanisms of the art world; he challenges the production process, authoritative power and art market practices.

„Untitled (18_13_16)“ is part of Lund’s new work series „Painting of Things“, which is a growing series of optimised networked paintings that are evaluating their own performance and likability, and provides a networked narrative available online. The paintings are collages from works that have been performing well in auction, here remixed and juxtaposed to such a degree that only small traces of its previous life remains.

The work „Proposal 27“ is part of the Jonas Lund Token series. In this work series he created shares of his artistic practice as a crypto currency that allows the shareholder to influence his artistic development. One share corresponds exactly to one „Jonas Lund Token“. In this way, Lund questions the traditional power structures that characterize the contemporary art world, as well as the process of making optimal strategic decisions. Through his works, Lund investigates the latest issues generated by the increasing digitalization of contemporary society like authorship, participation and distribution of agency. At the same time, he questions the mechanisms of the art world; he challenges the production process, authoritative power and art market practices. The price of the work corresponds to the current value of the Jonas Lund Token and is a net price.

The editions are created through the use of an artificially intelligent neural network that has been inspired by the work of some of the most hyped artists. By using a very rudimentary early javascript implementation of the core concepts of machine learning, the simplicity in the results seem to capture the essence perfectly.
