Studio Visit with Susanne Bonowicz

In the work of Susanne Bonowicz, the city condenses into a visual echo chamber of fragments, movements, and memories. Her painting oscillates between control and intuition, between graphic clarity and gestural layering. What begins as a fleeting impression gradually unfolds, layer by layer, into a complex narrative of urban reality – increasingly extending beyond the canvas and into space. In conversation, Susanne Bonowicz offers insight into her current projects, new formal experiments, and the role of the studio as a space for artistic reflection and development.

What are you currently working on and which topics or concepts are at the centre of your work?

Susanne Bonowicz: Currently, I continue to explore the condensation of urban imagery, seeking to translate visual and atmospheric impressions of the city into layered compositional structures. I am particularly interested in how urban reality emerges from fleeting moments, media fragments, and subjective memory. The city functions less as a fixed location than as a dynamic mesh of movement, perception, and projection. At the core of my painterly practice remains the interplay between controlled structure and spontaneous gesture, between graphic order and visual superimposition.

Are there any new developments or experiments in your practice that you find particularly exciting?

Susanne Bonowicz: Currently, I am exploring ways to extend my visual language beyond the confines of the canvas. I am experimenting with new materials and supports that allow for a more physical and spatial presence. The aim is to translate the dense, fragmentary structure of my painting into a more expansive, spatial form while maintaining a clear continuity with my existing series.

What role does your studio play as a creative workspace for you?

Susanne Bonowicz: My studio holds a central place within my artistic practice. As a space devoted solely to the act of making, it offers the necessary focus and freedom to extend processes, experiment with materials, and pursue new formal directions. More than a site of production, it is a space of reflection and a catalyst for ongoing artistic development.

About Susanne Bonowicz

In the abstract visual worlds of Susanne Bonowicz, the diverse forms of urban life condense into powerful compositions. Her works do not merely capture fleeting impressions of the urban everyday; they transcend them. Rows of houses, stretches of street, layered poster surfaces and flickering neon signs appear like fragments of memory within a visual stream of color, form and line. Spontaneous gestures are juxtaposed with precise constructions. Pseudo-typographic fragments, graphic structures and shimmering layers of color overlap and generate a rhythm reminiscent of the dynamics of urban movement. In these multilayered compositional landscapes, real places merge with digital and mental spaces. The city as a space of experience becomes an open field of association. Bonowicz works with a luminous, often boldly applied color spectrum that lends her works an intense visual presence. This chromaticity acts as an amplifier of urban energy: vibrating, ephemeral, demanding. Her paintings invite the viewer into a world suspended between reality and fiction, a visual structure that becomes stage, archive and projection all at once. Rather than defining a specific place, her work opens up a space in flux: multilayered, fragmented and constantly in motion.
