Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg

1987 Born in Bonn, working and living in Berlin

„I do many abstract works, but it never remains completely abstract. There is always a domesticated object or material. Abstract and concrete coexist, a simultaneous dependence on each other – there is an anchor towards reality and back to abstraction.“- Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg in an interview with Yvonne Scherer for Kuba Paris

Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg’s sculptural work is strongly influenced by painting.
The visual language deliberately stages painting and photography in the sculptural realm. Dunkelberg’s works brace against the stability of sculpture by dismantling the integrity of modernism’s fetishistic status and remixing styles from industrial processes.

Dunkelberg’s works tell of the new way of looking at and reading images influenced by digital developments, of the interdependence between abstraction and meaning. The digital thinking that seeks analog forms – physical objects that the artist uses as signifiers of social status and cultural value. Thus, the silhouettes of a cultural aesthetic reveal themselves only in the disguise of the banal.
