Studio Visit with Benjamin Bernt

„I see my practice as a continuous process from which new directions, themes or possibilities for representation emerge. An incidental trace can thus mark the beginning of a new work.“
In his Berlin studio, Benjamin Bernt explores the tension between abstract pictorial spaces and the human figure. His working method combines precisely planned steps with moments of spontaneous reaction. He draws influences from calligraphy, digital imagery and Stone Age cave painting – an unusual but formative combination that lends his works an idiosyncratic visual language.

„For me, the studio is a kind of experimental space in which anything can be possible, and at the same time a place of inner peace and concentration. Being surprised by the latest works also maintains a certain tension, which always makes me want to come back soon.“

His latest works once again emphasise figurative elements. Where previously strongly reduced silhouettes dominated, ambiguous, more complex figures now appear, introducing new types of images and expanding his visual language. The process of image creation itself has also changed: Everyday observations and newspaper motifs increasingly serve as source material, are alienated and translated into autonomous pictorial spaces. Bernt also experiments with unusual picture supports – such as chalk primers or paper-like canvas surfaces – and uses these as a source of inspiration in the painting process.
Bernt's studio is a place of concentration and openness at the same time: a space in which new directions can emerge, often triggered by incidental traces or surprising developments in the work process.
