In Dunkelbergs Arbeiten verschwindet das Offensichtliche hinter einer vielschichtigen Oberfläche: Die Wände verkleidet die Künstlerin mit Geschenkpapier. Die Papierbahnen dienen nicht nur als Motiv, sondern als lässig an die Wand getapte Tapete, die das Versprechen von Freude am Geschenk als Oberfläche für Zweifel nutzt.
Aufeinandergestapelte Geschenkboxen und filigrane Handzeichnungen, die durch ein mehrstufiges Abstraktionsverfahren zu Polystyrol-Reliefs verwandelt wurden, werden fast beiläufig geräumig. Das hierzu verwendete Verfahren, das aus der Prototypenentwicklung stammt, wird zum Modell für unsere menschlich konstruierten Welten – formbar, veränderbar, immer wieder hinterfragbar. 



Unter dem Titel s p a z z i (ital. Räume) verwandelt Dunkelberg die Ausstellungssituation in eine aufgeladene Umgebung, in der sich Dekoration, Packaging und Zeichnung zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung über gesellschaftliche Machtgefüge und patriarchale Muster verdichten.

The relief panels of Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg, abstract drawings serve as the starting material, which are then – using a vacuum gravure process – turned into objects. The reliefs exhibits the negative as outcome, which can be imagined much like the packaging of “Toffifee”. Dunkelberg’s works tell of the new way of looking at and reading images influenced by digital developments, of the interdependence between abstraction and meaning. The digital thinking that seeks analog forms – physical objects that the artist uses as signifiers of social status and cultural value. Thus, the silhouettes of a cultural aesthetic reveal themselves only in the disguise of the banal.

The question often arises, what if it were different than it is?
Does a painting have sculptural properties – and vice versa? Do industrialized and digital processes and forms cancel each other out? Who is pushed off the pedestal by whom?
The statuesque permanence of sculpture stands on no solid ground. It is a daily decision against this instability. Against the fetish of modernity, which wanders through the present as a whinging ghost. Ideas can still be dismantled. … (Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg)
