Studio Visit with Jagoda Bednarsky

“At the core of my artistic practice are questions of visibility, representation, and identity – particularly in contexts where traditional visual languages and power structures are questioned or shifted.”

A studio filled with fragments, motifs, and gestures – Jagoda Bednarsky’s painting moves between figuration and dissolution. Entering her studio means stepping into a cosmos where real and imagined images merge into a dense visual archive. Recurring elements shift in meaning, evolve, and form a pictorial language that feels at once familiar and surprising.

Characteristic of her work is its architectural structure: repetitive patterns and atmospheric backgrounds create spaces in which layers of color, signs, and gestures overlap. Bednarsky works with a wide range of techniques – from oil and acrylic to gouache and watercolor, as well as printmaking and airbrush. This diversity of materials serves as a strategy to question historical image traditions while inscribing her own sensitivity and experience into the work.

At present, watercolors take center stage in her practice. With their fluid immediacy and openness, they serve as direct sources of inspiration and form the foundation for large-scale canvases. They generate a tension between spontaneity and construction that lends her painting a distinctive vitality.

Recurring motifs such as surreal landscapes or the disembodied female breast provide a foundation that Bednarsky continuously reinterprets. She describes her studio as a catalytic space – a place where theoretical reflections, artistic discourses, and personal associations are transformed into images.
