Studio Visit with Henri Haake

„For me, painting is an open process in which past traces and fresh impulses flow into one another – a constant game between discovery and concealment, between control and chance.“

In his artistic practice, Henri Haake explores how memory, perception, and imagination shape our relationship to reality—particularly in an increasingly fragmented and accelerated present. He is drawn to moments when time seems to stand still and a deeper level of experience becomes possible.

„I am fascinated by a new way of looking at everyday life – how memory, perception and imagination intermingle to create new meanings. I am currently experimenting a lot with layering, overpainting and fragmentation in my work in order to visualise levels that otherwise remain hidden from us in the fast pace of the world. This results in images that are simultaneously familiar and opaque, elude the eye and yet invite us to linger and revisit them.“

His current works often approach the visible only tentatively: What initially appears familiar eludes us on closer inspection. In this limbo between materiality and dissolution, he explores a visual vocabulary that is not aimed at quick legibility, but rather at a pause – a kind of visualisation in the midst of excessive demands.

Haake's studio is less a place of pure production than a thinking space in which material, memory and chance enter into dialogue with one another. His paintings are created in the field of tension between control and letting go – a process that defies any clear interpretation and unfolds its power precisely in this way.

About Henri Haake

In his paintings and drawings, Henri Haake explores the poetic rhythms of everyday life through a process shaped by memory, perception and synthesis. Drawing from personal experience, observation, and art history, his work unfolds as a dialogue between past and present, the visible and the obscured. Layering, overpainting and experimentation are central to his practice, with traces of earlier gestures and submerged forms emerging through the surface. Figures and narratives often appear only to be blurred or concealed, resulting in compositions that remain unresolved and prompting viewers to return and look anew. Color plays a subtle yet powerful role, evoking a resonance that is felt more than seen. Beyond mere surface, it becomes a way of sensing—shaping mood, softening forms, and guiding emotional connection. Moving between the playful and the philosophical, his work creates layered spaces where the familiar becomes symbolic—inviting reflection on life and how we experience the world.
