Christian August

Christian Augusts (*1977 in Halle / Saale) work consists in capturing urban changes on canvas. What surrounds him, what he discovers in cityscapes, merges into his paintings. The grey of the house facades is his ground on which the compositions develop processually. Deep, abstract landscapes evolve, in which the viewer finds his own „visual paths“. The canvas is heavily edited, painted and washed off again, sanded and repainted. The fact that Christian August’s paintings are based on his past in Street Art and that they are based on painting from the façade onto the canvas is what makes his painting so special. He has a unique handwriting, which allows associations up to digital structures. His work is exemplary for the influence of street art on contemporary painting. Christian August's work is about diffuseness, about ambiguity. The boundaries are blurred. The colors blur, one cannot name them exactly. There is no black and white. Everything has grey values. Everything has different perspectives. Each and everyone has its own truth. We know too little to be able to form an exact picture of anything.

Inspiration is found in every discovery and every reflection. Christian August's paintings are painted unpredictably, he enjoys the element of surprise and his works are very passionate. He allows complexity in his painting, and rather surrenders to the desire for knowledge. August is inspired by the image of Earth taken by the Voyager1 space probe in 1990 from a distance of around 6 billion kilometers – „Pale Blue Dot“ shows how small and insignificant our Earth is. This puts his paintings into perspective and gives them a foothold.

„I like to deal with questions like: What is urbanity? What does a vibrant city look like? What does an open and free city feel like? I like to juxtapose the living with the artificial and work with this contrast.“ – Christian August
