The Digital Art Mile – Jonas Lund and Sara Ludy

From June 10 to 16, The Digital Art Mile, a new digital art fair format in Basel.

At various exhibition venues along Rebgasse, in close proximity to Art Basel, internationally renowned galleries and NFT platforms will showcase contemporary and historical digital art. Highlights include the launch of a new generative piece „Bit Operations“ by Jonas Lund at fx(hash).

Additionally a painting by Sara Ludy from the series „Untitled“ will be showcased paired with a digital counterpart on objkt.com

Bit Operations is an visual exploration of computer fundamentals through bit-shifting operations. The visuals are generated by continuously shifting and combining binary patterns, resulting in evolving compositions of stark pixels and geometric shapes. The accompanying audio components are synthesized from this same modulating bit data.

At its core, the piece is driven by algorithms that perform bit-shifting – the simple acts of pushing binary values left or right within the computer's memory. By combining multiple shifting patterns together in different ways, complex permutations of light and dark visuals emerge. The audio reflects these same bit-level operations, with the rhythms and tones mapping directly to the shifts occurring in the data.

Through this formal process focused on bit-shifting, the piece lays bare the fundamental building blocks of how modern computers operate under the hood. It reduces computational logic to its most essential level – the manipulation of 1s and 0s through rudimentary shift operations. Yet from this simplicity, an infinite space of variations arises, both visually and aurally, highlighting the immense complexity potential within even the most basic digital operations.

The physical pieces are also part of the generative Series Bit Operations by Jonas Lund. Launched in 2024 during Digital Art Mile the work is part of the collaboration with fx(hash) and OFFICE IMPART.

The selected painting span traditional and contemporary techniques while pointing towards concepts of latent space relevant to both AI and the inner mind. The forms are inspired by nature and instinct, while the surface is influenced by screen mediation – the ways in which light and media reflect and illuminate, altering our perception of the world. Through this, the painting become embodiments and abstractions of life mediated through screens in the age of AI.

Untitled 5
was created in 2020, prior to working with AI, yet it uncannily resembles the forms of AI that she works with now. It’s as if the multidimensional and shapeshifting qualities the forms have in the paintings were pointing towards something to come just a few years later.
